Clearing a Path to Reliable Power
Trees have significant meaning in our lives; they are majestic, beautiful, and, quite literally, they are good for the soul. A great quote by Russell Page describes it best: “To plant a tree is to give body and life to one’s dreams of a better world.” Additionally, at Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative (YVEC), we know that our members depend on us to deliver reliable power to their homes and businesses. That’s why Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative strives to balance maintaining the beautiful surroundings we all cherish with ensuring reliable electricity. There are several benefits to regular tree trimming.
Keeping power lines clear of overgrown vegetation improves service reliability. After all, we’ve all seen the whims of Mother Nature during severe weather events with fallen tree limbs taking down power lines and even utility poles. This was never more evident than during the major thunderstorms of June this past spring. While many factors can impact the distribution of power, a significant percentage can be attributed to overgrown vegetation, specifically trees. That is why you frequently see YVEC right-of-way crews out in the community trimming trees near our power lines. We have 2 full-time tree trimming crews, which are certified and trained in the latest industry standards of clearance and safety.
All U.S. electric utilities have a responsibility to trim trees that grow close to power lines. Scheduled trimming throughout the year keeps lines clear from overgrown or dead limbs that could fall and contact the conductor. Maintenance trimming also better prepares YVEC for severe weather events like high winds and heavy snow. Plus, we all know it is much more cost-effective to undertake preventative maintenance than it is to make repairs after the fact. Through our own interactive software program, our tree crews keep close tabs on the rotation of areas with known trimming needs.
Working near power lines can be dangerous, and we care about your safety as well as the safety of our employees. Any tree branch that falls across a power line creates a potentially dangerous situation. A proactive approach lessens the chance of issues during weather events. Restoring power and trimming trees during storms is more complicated and dangerous.
YVEC always strives to keep costs down for our members. Leaving trees and other vegetation overgrown and unchecked is expensive to correct. A strategic trimming program helps keep costs down for everyone.
There are ways you can help, too. When planting trees, make sure they are planted a safe distance from overhead power lines. Typically, that distance varies between 25 to 50 feet depending on the size of the tree being planted. Safe planting is also important near underground equipment, such as pad-mount transformers. A 10-foot circumference from the “green box” provides safety and convenience for our line crews. Always call 811 before you begin any project that requires digging.
