Nuclear Development Is the Answer
The world is currently grappling with urgent and growing energy demands and, some believe, looming threats of climate change. Nuclear energy, once viewed with skepticism, is emerging as a vital component in the clean energy landscape. For decades, the U.S. nuclear energy industry has operated largely under the radar, quietly providing about half of the country’s zero-carbon emission electricity. Recently, nuclear energy has gained increasing recognition as a reliable and consistent power source, positioning it as a key player in efforts to reduce carbon footprints.
In the past few years, the Northwest Region of the United States has seen a surge in power demand due to factors such as population growth, economic development, increasing electrification of transportation, and expansion in manufacturing and residential housing. Additionally, server farms, which are essential for artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency mining, and cloud computing are also major contributors to this rapid increase in power demand. At the same time, many mandates have been put in place to reduce and remove greenhouse gases, which is having the effect of reducing the supply of electricity. Growing demand coupled with a shrinking energy supply underscores the need for dependable, carbon-free energy sources to sustain growth in the region and maintain our high quality of life.
To uphold this momentum, utilities are collaborating to advance nuclear technology and results are becoming evident. As an example, in January 2024, Puget Sound Energy signed an agreement to provide $10M toward Energy Northwest’s next-generation nuclear feasibility study. The Washington State Legislature also passed a capital investment of $25M in advanced nuclear energy development, the first significant investment in nuclear energy generation by the Washington State Legislature in decades.
Developing an affordable energy source, at a time when demand is skyrocketing, is absolutely essential to maintaining our way of life.
A truly transformative shift is underway in the form of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), which offer a more compact and scalable alternative to traditional nuclear plants. SMRs also incorporate a multitude of safety features, building upon the experience from the unparalleled safety operations of the current fleet of nuclear power plants. The changing landscape of energy doesn’t end with SMRs. Big players like Amazon are partnering with utilities to help speed up the development of SMRs. These partnerships are essential for securing funding, technical expertise, and innovation, which will only help bring the first modular reactors online sooner. These relationships will help public power entities harness new energy to meet our region’s growing demands. (58275000)
Electricity, in today’s world, is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. We rely on it to buy groceries, pump gas, heat and cool our homes, and keep our food safe. It recharges our phones and all our battery-powered devices, and it runs our traffic lights, elevators, and medical devices. Developing an affordable energy source, at a time when demand is skyrocketing, is absolutely essential to maintaining our way of life. Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative (YVEC) and our power supply partners are committed to delivering the best value to our members while maintaining reliability and driving growth.
