2021 Youth Tour Scholarship Contest

Montana Electric Cooperatives Association (MECA) has elected not to participate in The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) 2021 Youth Tour to Washington, D.C. due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and current restrictions in place.

However, the Youth Tour essay contest for 2021 will still go on, with the statewide winner receiving a $2,500 scholarship to a college or trade school.

In addition, Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative will offer two, $2,000 scholarships to YVEC members.

This year's essay topic is: How has reliable electricity benefitted you and your community through the CO VID-19 pandemic?

Guidelines and eligibility for the Youth Tour Essay Scholarship:

  • The student must be a junior or senior in high school in the fall of 2021 (currently a sophomore or junior)
  • The student and/or parent or guardian must be served by an electric cooperative
  • The essay must include a cover page with the student's name, address, and telephone number
  • Submit the essay to YVEC no later than December 18, 2020

MECA $500 Scholarship

Montana Electric Cooperatives' Association (MECA) offers a $500 scholarship to any college-bound undergraduate students. The applicant's parents must be receiving electric service from Yellowstone Valley Electric Cooperative (YVEC) and be a member of the Montana Electric Cooperatives' Association. The scholarships may be used at a Montana college, university, or at an out-of-state institution. Funds for these scholarships come from donations that honor the memories of deceased directors, managers, and employees who have served the electric cooperative.

MECA scholarship applications need to be turned into the YVEC office by January 22, 2021. Applications will be judged by YVEC's scholarship committee and a finalist will be selected for submission to MECA.

Your application will be judged on the following components:

  • 20% Academic strength (as demonstrated by rigors of coursework, GPA, and national testing scores)
  • 20% Activities in school and community, awards, and honors
  • 20% Employment, volunteerism, and community service
  • 40% Personal statement

Basin $1000 Scholarship

Basin Electric Power Cooperative (BEPC) offers a $1,000 scholarship to students enrolled or planning to enroll in a full-time graduate or undergraduate course of study at an accredited two or four-year college, university, or vocational/technical school. The scholarships are awarded based on academic record, the potential to succeed, leadership, and participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, a statement of education and career goals, and an outside appraisal.
